Baboon Rock wines get a fresh new look & our Chacma baboon conservation drive

Discover more about our rebranding of the delightful Baboon Rock wine range and why we’ve joined forces with primate conservation organization, Baboon Matters

NEW LOOK, SAME INCREDIBLE TASTE PROFILE

La Petite Ferme is excited to announce the rebranding of the beloved Baboon Rock wine range, our playful and creative label. Our goal is to blend curiosity with a touch of modern sophistication, while maintaining the heritage that La Petite Ferme is known for.

Our Baboon Rock wines have always been a testament to innovation and resilience. The range originated after a challenging harvest in 2012 when a troop of baboons plundered our Chardonnay grapes. We decided to source cool-climate, lime-soil grapes from Robertson, and created a fresh, unwooded Chardonnay that embodied the playful spirit of our baboons. We recently added the Baboon Rock Grenache Noir, a light, fruity red that perfectly complements the Chardonnay. Together, they form a modern pair that delights the palate.

Over the past few months, we have given our Baboon Rock labels a fresh, contemporary feel that pays homage to the wild Chacma baboons that frequent our estate. The new label features an exquisitely hand-drawn Chacma baboon. Set against a subtle fynbos backdrop in a halo format, the label positions this majestic creature in its natural environment, highlighting the importance of conservation.

LA PETITE FERME JOINS FORCES WITH BABOON MATTERS

To us, terroir is also about sharing territory. This is why we are excited about our new partnership with Baboon Matters to support the conservation of Chacma baboons.

As custodians of our land, we are honoured to share the space with wild baboons. On a visit to La Petite Ferme, you might have spotted the cheeky creatures that occasionally pop in to our vineyards to pilfer the ripest grapes. While their antics may try us, we understand that we are merely custodians of this land, and it’s important to us to respectfully coexist with these wild animals.

We are proud to be joining forces with leading baboon conservationists, Baboon Matters. “Baboon Matters aims to ensure the holistic and long-term environmental protection of baboons in South Africa and to provide effective, non-aggressive alternatives to managing human-baboon conflict,” says the organization’s Jenny Trethowan. La Petite Ferme is donating a percentage of each bottle of our Baboon Rock wines sold to this non-profit organization. Even more excitingly, Baboon Matters is set to train our team on best practice for managing and coexisting harmoniously with our resident Chacma baboons.

So next time you visit us and spot these wily primates in action, raise a glass of Baboon Rock wine to them and know that you’re playing your part in their long-term conservation.

BABOON ROCK UNWOODED CHARDONNAY 2024

This wine is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes grown in the Robertson region of the Western Cape, which are picked between 22.0 and 22.5 balling. Cold fermentation in stainless-steel tanks ensures a Chardonnay that retains its freshness. It has lemon and lime notes leading into beautiful tropical fruit. This is a wine with a lingering zesty acidity that develops over time in bottle.

Wine Analysis
Residual sugar 2.5g/l | pH 3.38 | Total acid 6.4g/l | Alcohol 14.02%

BABOON ROCK GRENACHE NOIR 2021

Made with 85% Grenache Noir and 15% Mourvedre, this Wine of Origin Franschhoek is a Grenache Noir that brims with juicy red cherry and pomegranate. A bright line of acidity follows through on a light fresh finish. It is best enjoyed a little bit chilled.
The grapes were picked early morning, with some whole bunches included in the ferment to elevate the fruit and create beautiful fine tannins. Fermented in closed stainless-steel tanks and then aged in old barrels for 10 months.

Wine Analysis
Residual sugar 2,2g/l | pH 3,44 | Total acid 5,5g/l | Alcohol 13,13%
