At the heart of our winemaking lies a profound belief that every bottle tells a unique story. Each vintage, each varietal, is a chapter in the ongoing narrative of our land, our vines, and the delicate interplay of nature’s elements. We are co-creators with nature. This partnership requires care at every stage, from the vineyard to the cellar. Our approach is one of gentle stewardship, allowing the grapes to express their true character and potential without imposing a predetermined outcome.

Meet Wikus Pretorius, the winemaker who turned his love for good times into a lifelong passion for crafting extraordinary wines. With a degree in marketing in hand, Wikus initially sought out the vibrant energy of Stellenbosch, where he found himself pouring wine in the tasting room at Muratie—not just to make ends meet, but for a little “partying pocket money.” But as fate would have it, his curiosity got the best of him, and soon enough, he was rolling up his sleeves during harvest season, diving headfirst into the winemaking process.
His thirst for adventure and knowledge took him from the vineyards of Stellenbosch to the rugged beauty of Corsica, where he learned the nuances of winemaking on the French island. From there, he set off to gather wisdom and grapes across the globe, with harvests in California and Australia broadening his expertise.
And just when you think his story couldn’t get more thrilling—Wikus returned to Stellenbosch in 2005, landing a role at the former Haskell Vineyards. Not one to shy away from challenges, he then found himself in Namibia, tasked with setting up a winery for a German businessman. It was there that Wikus survived a near-fatal helicopter crash, proving that he’s as resilient as the wines he crafts.
In 2015, Wikus found his true home at La Petite Ferme, where he’s been blending his global experience with the unique terroir of Franschhoek ever since. His down-to-earth personality and authenticity shine through in every bottle, with a sense of humour that’s as delightfully dry as the wines he creates.
Under Wikus’s expert guidance, La Petite Ferme offers a diverse portfolio that honours our rich heritage while embracing the innovation that will carry us into the future.
La Petite Ferme is pleased to announce the rebranding of the Baboon Rock wine range. With a contemporary touch, we blend curiosity and modern sophistication, maintaining our heritage.
New Look, Same Incredible Taste
Baboon Rock wines have always showcased innovation and resilience. Originating from a challenging 2012 harvest, the Baboon Rock Chardonnay and the recently added Grenache Noir offer a delightful pairing. The new label, designed by Sophia Louw, features an exquisitely detailed Chacma Baboon, set against a subtle fynbos backdrop in a halo format, emphasising conservation and terroir.
La Petite Ferme Partners with Baboon Matters
In a new venture, La Petite Ferme partners with Baboon Matters to support Chacma baboon conservation. We will donate a percentage of Baboon Rock wine sales to their efforts. Jenni Trethowan of Baboon Matters states, “Baboon Matters aims to ensure the long-term protection of baboons in South Africa and provide effective, non-aggressive management solutions.” As custodians of our land, we are proud to share our space with these wild creatures.
Our boutique La Petite Ferme wine portfolio includes a Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Grenache Noir Rosé, and four reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and two flagship blends. The first blend, The Verdict, is a Cabernet Franc-driven Bordeaux-style blend, and the second, Variation, is an impressive Rhône-style red. Complementing these are two playful siblings, the Baboon Rock Unwooded Chardonnay and Baboon Rock Grenache Noir.
