THE ZA · FIRST EDITION

One wine. One artwork. One moment in time.

Meet The ZA Pinotage 2024: the first chapter in an annual collector’s series where South African wine, art and place come together. Only 866 individually numbered bottles exist. Once this edition is gone, it will never be repeated.

The Story

A bottle that holds more than wine

Some wines capture a vintage. The ZA captures a meeting of people, place and creative expression.
Born at La Petite Ferme in Franschhoek, The ZA is an annual collaboration with emerging South African artists. Each edition begins with a singular wine and invites a new creative voice to interpret its sense of place. The result is a limited release with an identity entirely its own — made once, numbered by hand and never reproduced.

The inaugural edition brings together Old Vine Pinotage from Piekenierskloof, the craftsmanship of winemaker Wikus Pretorius and original artwork by illustrator Jolien Koen. Together, they tell a story rooted in heritage and alive with possibility.

The Wine

THE ZA PINOTAGE 2024
Rooted in old vines. Made for a new legacy.

High in the distinctive landscape of Piekenierskloof, Citrusdal, old Pinotage vines have learned to thrive with quiet resilience. Their fruit was selected by La Petite Ferme winemaker Wikus Pretorius to create a wine that speaks of South African heritage, careful craftsmanship and the character of its origin.
Every one of the 866 bottles is individually numbered and signed by Wikus — a personal mark on a release that can never be recreated.

From Canvas to Bottle

A South African landscape, imagined in a new way.

Through The ZA Project, thirteen final-year Illustration students from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design & Photography were invited to interpret South African heritage, terroir and culture. Jolien Koen’s work was chosen to give the First Edition its visual identity.
Birds, plants, soil and vines meet in her composition, expressing the diversity of the South African landscape and La Petite Ferme’s deep connection to place. It is a story of resilience, craftsmanship and belonging — first created on canvas, now carried by every bottle.
